Biographical notes:

Chauncy Hugh Stigand (1877-1911) was born in Boulogne-sur-Mer on October 25, 1877. He served in the military as part of the Royal West Kent Regiment. In 1905 he was mauled by a lion and had to go back to England to be treated. At that time he published his handbook, Scouting and Reconnaissance in Savage Countries, and The Game of British East Africa. He was then appointed as a fellow in both the Geological Society and the Zoology Society. Between 1905 and 1908 he traveled and hunted throughout East Africa. When he became District Officer of the Mongalla Province, he gained experience resulting in his most authoritative work, Administration in Tropical Africa. In February 1919 he became governor of the Mongalla Province. He was killed later that year.
