Biographical notes:
The family of John L. Ingersoll (1823-1898), a physician in Wisconsin. Chiefly represented are his brothers, Robert G. (1833-1899) & Ebon C. (1831-1879); his father, Rev. John Ingersoll (1792-1859); and his children, Mary, Burton, & John F.
Dr. Ingersoll practiced medicine in Prospect Hill (now Prospect, a part of New Berlin, Wis.) from 1849 until his death. His father, Rev. Ingersoll, was pastor of various Presbyterian & Congregational churches in N.Y., Ohio, Wis., Mich., Ind., Ky. & Ill. His brother, Robert, taught school in Tenn. & Ill.; commanded the 11th Illinois Cavalry (1862-1863); practiced law in Peoria, Washington, D.C., & New York; and was a well-known orator & proponent of agnosticism. Brother Ebon practiced law with Robert and served in the US House of Representatives (1864-1871). Of Dr. Ingersoll's children: Mary's poetry was published in a Milwaukee newspaper, John F. was a railway agent, and Burton worked in his uncle Robert's Washington law office.
