Davidson College. President (1841-1854 : Williamson)
Biographical notes:
Samuel Williamson, 1795-1882, was the second president of Davidson College serving from 1841 to 1854. He came to Davidson in 1839, joining the faculty as a professor of mathematics and natural philosophy. While president Williamson also taught classes in chemistry, geology, physics, logic, metaphysics, law, political economy and moral philosophy. During his time as president the campus experienced problems with student discipline and underwent several changes in faculty. When Williamson assumed office the faculty consisted of Williamson, Samuel Blair Wilson, and Mortimer Johnston. Elijah F. Rockwell joined the faculty in 1850, James Gilland in 1852 and Daniel Harvey Hill in 1853. In 1853 Wilson and Johnston resigned and in 1854 Williamson and Gilland resigned.
