Biographical notes:

The Central Leather Company was incorporated under the laws of New Jersey on April 12, 1905, as the reorganization of the United States Leather Company. The company, headquartered in New York City, owned plants and properties in Pennsylvania, and the Appalachian region of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee, lumber mills in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, a glue works in Milwaukee and a finishing plant in Elizabeth, N.J. The company also owned the entire capital stock of the Tionesta Valley Railway Company and the Susquehanna & New York Railroad Company, which served the tanbark and tannery region of north central and northwestern Pennsylvania. The company ran into financial difficulties in 1926 and was reorganized as the United States Leather Company on June 23, 1927. It was finally liquidated in 1953.
