Michael Piller was born 30 May 1948 in Portchester, N.Y., and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in radio, television, and motion pictures. After a career as an Emmy Award-winning television news producer, Piller wrote for and produced Simon & Simon and other television shows. He was best known for his work as executive producer and writer for the series Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager, the latter two of which he helped create. After developing other shows, including The Dead Zone, Piller died in Los Angeles, Calif., on 1 November 2005.
