Larry Pointer researched and wrote about western rodeo and western outlaws. His best-known work was "In Search of Butch Cassidy."

Leslie Larrimore Pointer was born in Sheridan, Wyoming, in 1940. His best known works are In Search of Butch Cassidy (1977) and The Rodeo Champions (1985). Pointer worked as an instructor in botany and agriculture (1963-1974) at various community colleges in Wyoming and Oregon. In 1975 he received his masters degree in librarianship with a specialization in archives. He worked for the Bureau of Land Management in Montana and Arizona. He also held a position as Chief of Resources for the National Park Service in Boston, Massachusetts.
