Biographical notes:

Resident, Galesburg, Illinois; Swedish-born Civil War captain, 15th Iowa Infantry, Company B; appointed assistant commissary of muster, district of Natchez, Mississippi, 1863-1865.

Immigrated to United States in 1852, settling in Knox County, Illinois. Before the Civil War Lanstrum worked as a clerk in a dry goods store and a grocery store and engaged in the real estate business. After moving to Des Moines, Iowa in 1861, he assisted in organizing a company of volunteers that mustered into the army as Compnay B, 15th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Lanstrum was the company's second lieutenant. He was promoted to first lieutenant on May 24, 1862, and to captain, February 19, 1863. During the siege of Vicksburg, he did picket duty for Crocker's Iowa Brigade. In October 1863, he was appointed assistant commissary of muster for the district of Natchez, Mississippi, where he served until mustered out in 1865. After the close of the war he returned to Galesburg and went into the grocery business. On December 9, 1861, Lanstrum married Susan E. Crocker, sister of General Marcellus M. Crocker, and had 7 children.
