Biographical notes:
International evangelism conference; held July 12-21, 1983, in Amsterdam; primary goal was to provide encouragement and advanced training for individuals involved in full-time evangelistic preaching ministry; attendance was by invitation only with 3800 participants representing 133 countries; key conference figures included Werner Burklin (executive director), Leighton Ford (chair of the program committee) and Walter Smyth (chair of executive committee); also known as Amsterdam '83 or ICIE '83; followed three years later by the similar but larger Amsterdam '86; sponsored by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA), which was founded in 1950 to: coordinate Billy Graham's ministry; plan and conduct evangelistic events around the world; produce radio and television programs, films, magazines, books and other products; help organize regional and international conferences of evangelistic workers.
