Bernays, Isaac, 1792-1849
Variant namesBiographical notes:
Isaac Bernays was rabbi in Hamburg from 1821. He struggled against the Reform movement and influenced his disciple, Samson Raphael Hirsch. His son, Jacob, taught Greek at Bonn University (1848-53), but, as a Jew, could not be promoted. He then left and helped found the Breslau Rabbinical Seminary in 1853. He was later reinstated in Bonn in 1866 as assistant professor and chief librarian.
