Sir Thomas Clarke (1704-1764) graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1724 and was called to the bar in 1729. Clarke was commissioned to collate the Earl of Macclesfield's copy of Fleta with the first edition; he published a third edition himself, anonymously, in 1735. He served as a member of Parliament from 1747 to 1761, and was appointed Master of the Rolls in 1754.
