Samuel and Dorothy Shields lived in Bedford, Nova Scotia, during the 1940s and 50s. Samuel Shields owned a barber shop located in Halifax's Roy Building. His wife Dorothy was born in Bermuda and came to live in Nova Scotia after she was married. The couple were active in local organizations, including the Canadian Authors Association and the Nova Scotia Centre of the Poetry Society. Dorothy Shields served a three year presidency of the later organization and wrote a number of locally published poems and articles. Her work was also featured in the anthology Chapbooks.
