Biographical notes:

The Boston State Hospital Psychopathic Dept. was created as a teaching and training center for Harvard Medical School students in 1912. In 1920, the center separated from Boston State Hospital and was renamed the Boston Psychopathic Hospital as a center for the reception, diagnosis, and disposition of acute psychiatric patients, usually admitting patients for short periods. The Hospital shifted its outpatient focus in 1943 to the treatment and research of mental illness. In 1956, the Hospital was renamed the Massachusetts Mental Health Center.
