Douglas William Freshfield was born on 27 April 1845 in Hampstead. Educated at Eaton and Oxford he became an accomplished mountaineer, climbing extensively in the Alps. He published Exploration of the Caucasus in 1896. In 1914 he was appointed president of the Royal Geographical Society a post he occupied until 1917. He died in 1934.

In the summer of 1914 Freshfield corresponded with Lady Kathleen Scott, the widow of Antarctic Explorer Robert Falcon Scott regarding a memorial for him at the Royal Geographical Society.
