Fitz (Harvard, M.D. 1868) was a physician at the Boston Dispensary from 1871 to 1882 and taught pathology at the Harvard Medical School from 1873 to 1908. In 1892 he was appointed Hersey Professor of the Theory and Practice of Physic and served as visiting physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, 1887-1908. Fitz was the first to identify appendicitis and prescribe appendectomy. He also did research on the pancreas, discovering that pancreatitis is sometimes a complication of hyperparathyroidism.
