Kertész, André. American Photographer. Born: Andor Kertesz in Budapest, Hungary, 2 July 1894; emigrated to France, 1925, and to the United States, 1936; naturalized, 1944. Education: Studied at the Academy of Commerce, Budapest, 1910-12; self-taught in photography. Military Service: Served in the Austro-Hungarian Army in Poland, Albania, and Rumania, 1914-15. Family: Married Elisabeth Sali in 1933. Career: Photographer from 1912. Worked as an accounts clerk, Budapest Stock Exchange, 1912-14, 1918-25; freelance photographer, working for Frankfurt Illustrierte, Berliner Illustrierte, Uhu, Strasburger Illustrierte, Le Nazionale de Fiorenza, Vu, Sourire, The Times, London, Paris, 1925-35; Contract Photographer, Keystone Studios, New York, freelance photographer, New York, 1962 until his death in 1985. Recipient: Photography Competition Prize, Borsszem Janko magazine, Budapest, 1916; Silver Medal, Exposition Coloniale, Paris, 1930; Gold Medal, 4th Mostra Biennale Internazionale della Fotografia, Venice, 1963; Guggenheim Fellowship, 1974; Mayors Award, New York, 1977; University of Salford Award, England, 1980. Member of Honor, American Society of Magazine Photographers, 1965. Commander, Order of Arts and Letters, France, 1977. Officer, Legion Honneur, France, 1983. Died: New York, September 27, 1985.
