Biographical notes:

The Statistics Department at The George Washington University was founded in 1935, with Professor Frank Weida being the sole faculty member. One of the department's most illustrious faculty was Solomon Kullback, professor of Statistics and winner of the Samuel S. Wilks Memorial Medal in 1976 presented by the American Statistical Association. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from GW in 1934, and was chairman of the Statistics Department from 1962-72. He was a research analyst for the Defense Department and National Security Agency from 1930-62, which included work with the elite World War II group ⁰́₋The Codebreakers⁰́₊ which successfully broke the Japanese code using statistical information theory.
