Biographical notes:

Joan Tate was born in Tonbridge, Kent, England in 1922. She attended a university in Sweden when war broke out and was unable to return to England until 1942. During that period she became proficient in Swedish and much of her professional work has been as a translator of important Swedish, Danish, and Norwegian authors, translating more than seventy books for children and sixty books for adults. She is best known for her short novels written for adolescents that contain themes such as early marriage, kidnapping, runaways, and contemporary urban life. Joan Tate is a prolific writer, a translator of more than 70 books for children and 60 for adults, and is a publisher's reader. She is best known for her young adult fiction, but has also written fiction for beginning readers, nonfiction, and translations of Aesop.
