Philpott served as Auburn University president, 1965-80. In addition to the customary academic and administrative issues, he dealt with the role of intercollegiate athletics in institutions of higher education, racial integration of faculty and student body, student activism, and the politics of Alabama higher education.

Philpott, a graduate of Washington and Lee University, received his Ph. D. in religion and higher education from Yale in 1947. After holding faculty and administrative positions at the University of Florida and Stephens College in Missouri, he was named president of Auburn University in 1965 and served until his retirement in 1980.
