Biographical notes:

The Worcester Association for the Protection of Fruit was organized in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1843 for the purpose of protecting "Gardens, Orchards and Fields for depredations," i.e., thieves. The members agreed to "detect and furnish means of punishing all depredations" either through a settlement with the guilty persons or through prosecution in court. One of the Association's directors was Rejoice Newton (1782-1868).
