Biographical notes:
Corporal Gerald A. Willey served in the United States (U.S.) Army during the Korean War with the Public Information Office, Headquarters, 3rd Infantry Division. On 7 March 1950 he enlisted in the Army Reserves, and was assigned to Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 331st Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division. Willey was activated on 27 June 1951. He trained with the 5th Infantry Division at Indiantown Gap Military Reservation in Pennsylvania before being sent to Korea as a replacement. On 2 July 1952, he was assigned as a combat correspondent with the 3rd Division and was attached to the 65th Infantry Regiment. During the late summer of 1952, he was wounded by a mortar round near Kelly Hill. He was able to treat himself at an aid station, and returned to duty. Willey was released from active duty on 25 March 1953 at Fort Custer, Michigan. He returned to The Ohio State University and graduated from the School of Journalism in June 1954.
