Biographical notes:

Joseph Taggart McNarney (b. Aug. 28, 1893, Emporium, Pennsylvania-d. Feb. 1, 1972), General in the U.S. Army, graduated from West Point in 1915. During World War I, he served as commanding officer, 1st Corp Observation Group; head of Air Service, 3rd Corps; and on the staff of the chief of Air Service, 1st Army during key offensives in France. After graduating from Command and General Staff School and the Army War College, he was an instructor at the Army War College and served with the war plans division of the War Department General Staff. He was a member of the Commission investigating the Pearl Harbor attack and became acting supreme allied commander in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations near the end of World War II. Assignments after the War included commanding general of U.S. Forces in Europe and commander of Air Materiel Command. General McNarney retired in January 1952.
