Petersen, Laurence E., 1931-
Biographical notes:
Astrophysicist educated at the Stout Institute (B.S.) and the University of Minnesota (M.S. and Ph. D). In 1962, Peterson was appointed an assistant professor of physics at UCSD, where he assumed a leading role in the Orbiting Solar Observatory A mission, a collaborative project between astrophysicists at UCSD and the University of Minnesota. Peterson became the leader of the UCSD High Energy Astronomy Group, which conducted pioneering research in the development of background collimated detectors and large area phoswich scintillation detectors. He directed the UCSD Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences (CASS) from 1989 to 1994. The recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship and the NASA Exceptional Achievement Award, Peterson retired from UCSD in 1994 as professor emeritus.
