The Scientific Event Alert Network (S.E.A.N.) was established in December 1975 to provide scientists with timely information concerning transient geophysical, astronomical, biological, and anthropological events. At that time, the functions and key personnel of the Center for Short-Lived Phenomena at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory were transferred to S.E.A.N.. S.E.A.N. was placed under the administration of the Director's Office, National Museum of Natural History. In 1981 S.E.A.N. offices were moved to the Department of Mineral Sciences, and in the following year it stopped reporting biological and anthropological events. In 1990 S.E.A.N. was renamed the Global Volcanism Network.
S.E.A.N. was directed by David R. Squires, Operations Officer, 1976-1981, and Lindsay R. McClelland, Museum Specialist, 1981-1990.
