Biographical notes:

The J. Marion Sims Medical Society was established in February 1923 by a group of students from the Medical College of the State of South Carolina. For the first few months, the Society was called the William Osler Medical Society, until Dr. W. Phillips, professor of anatomy at the College, suggested that, "as a body of South Carolinians, we should adopt the name of a Carolina man for the society." Thus in April 1923, the name of the Society was officially changed to the J. Marion Sims Medical Society. Members in the society were elected from among the students of the School of Medicine. Members presented case histories or papers on medicine, with seniors obliged to produce a senior thesis for the Society in addition to the thesis submitted for graduation.
