Samuel Reid Russell was born in Belfast, Ireland, on December 27, 1880. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1904 and joined E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. as a salesman in the Nashville office in 1907. He was soon transferred to the Technical Division of the Explosives Dept., where he rose to the position of Senior technician and a leader in the rigging and supervising of dynamite blasts for demolition, quarrying, and harbor deepening. He died suddenly in the morning of July 7, 1943, in a hotel in Easton, Pa., where he was about to supervise a blast.
