Francis Boardman Crowninshield was born in New York on April 22, 1869. He attended St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H. and graduated from Harvard University in 1891. In 1898, Crowninshield joined Troop K of Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders and took part in the Cuban campaign of the Spanish American War. On June 28, 1900, he married Louise Evelina du Pont. His interests were painting, architecture and design, and boat racing. He was one of the country's leading yachtsmen and was part of the American team that won the King of Spain's cup in 1910.
