Luther E. Hall (1869-1921), 35th governor of Louisiana, from 1912 to 1916, was one of the main contenders to fill the unexpired term of United States Senator Robert F. Broussard, who died in office, early in 1918. The primary election was held Sept. 10, 1918, against Edward J. Gay of Iberville Parish, the eventual winner of the Senate seat.
