Biographical notes:

George Wilkins Kendall was a founder of the NEW ORLEANS PICAYUNE and the first documented American war correspondent. He was also a sheep rancher in the area which became Kendall County, Texas. Married in 1849 to Adeline de Valcourt, he had four children: Georgina Kendall Fellowes, who collected material relating to her father's life; George William Kendall; Henry Fletcher Kendall, a West Point graduate who served in Cuba, Texas, and the Philippines; and Caroline Louise Kendall. Fletcher's son, William Henry Kendall, was also a West Point graduate and served during World War II in Hawaii.
