As an officer of the Office of Aboriginal Affairs and later its Deputy Secretary (1969-82) Long was involved in the development of land rights legislation and the establishment of Aboriginal organisations. Published works include: Aboriginal settlements: a survey of institutional communities in eastern Australia (1970). Appointed Commissioner of Community Relations, 1982.
