History notes:

Wayne County General Hospital operated from 1839 to 1981, and served as a psychiatric hospital that housed poor and sick people as well as the mentally ill. Known more commonly by the name of the nearby post office, Eloise Hospital was self-sufficient, and by the 1930s contained a dairy farm, its own fire department and over 7,000 people. It became known officially as Wayne County General Hospital in 1945. The hospital closed in 1981 and most of the seventy-eight buildings were destroyed.
