Biographical notes:

Union Church of African Members (also known as African Union Church) formed by Peter Spencer and others ca. 1812; first church building erected in 1813 at 819 French St., which became the mother church of the denomination; in 1851 denomination split into the African Union Methodist Protestant Church (AUMP) and the Union American Methodist Episcopal Church (UAME), the Mother Church staying with AUMP branch; the church worshipped in the building on French St., until 1970 when it was razed for urban renewal and the congregation moved into new quarters at Ninth and Franklin streets.
