Boland enlisted in the Wisconsin National Guard from Madison, Wisconsin and served on active duty for thirty years.
Upon his retirement from the military at the rank of colonel, he served as the Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs from 1992 until 2003. He resides in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.
