A native of Washington, D.C., Orme settled in Bloomington, Illinois where he became a lawyer and friend of Abraham Lincoln. Colonel of the 94th Illinois Infantry organized August 20, 1862, he was promoted to brigadier general March 13, 1863. He developed tuberculosis and resigned because of his health April 20, 1864. He died September 13, 1866.
