1728 entered the navy; 1730 lieutenant in the Litchfield; 1740-1741 served on the Weymouth; 1741 served at Cartagena; 1741 commander of the Mortar; 1742 flag captain of the Namur, served in the Mediterranean; 1742-1744 commander of the Guernsey; 1740 elected to the Royal Society; 1755-1758 served on the Stirling Castle; 1758 served on the Union; 1759 rear-admiral of the white, served on the Coromandel coast; 1761 commander-in-chief at Madras; 1762 captured Manila, governor of Cavite; 1762 vice-admiral of the blue; 1765-1770 MP for Shoreham; 1766 baronetcy.
