Biographical notes:

Dorothy Firman Van Ess (1885-1975), missionary (Mount Holyoke, B.A., 1906; Wellesley College, M.A., 1908) went to the Middle East for the Reformed Church in America (1909-1955). She founded a school for Arab girls in Basrah, Iraq (1912), traveled extensively in Kuwait, India, Persia, Lebanon and Cyprus (1955-1957), and published two books: Fatima and Her Sisters (1960) and Pioneers in the Arab World (1974).
