The company was incorporated in Michigan on December 28, 1878. Sold to Pere Marquette Railroad Company on December 7, 1899.
December 28, 1878 authorized to own and operate railroad property of the former Chicago and Michigan Lake Shore Railroad Company. April 2, 1881 authorized extension from New Buffalo, MI to Indiana state line. July 16, 1881 agreement for consolidation with Grand Haven Railroad Company, Indiana and Michigan Railroad Company, and Grand Rapids, Newaygo and Lake Shore Railroad Company. February 7, 1884 purchased White River Railroad Company. July 19, 1889 authorized to build a branch railroad from the village of Baldwin, MI via Lake, Manistee, Benzie, Grand, Traverse, Kalkaska, Antrim, Charlevoix and Emmet counties to Mackinaw City. July 1, 1891 leased Chicago and North Michigan Railroad Company. November 3, 1899 purchased Chicago and North Michigan Railroad Company.
