The 10th Mountain Division was the alpine ski division of the U.S. military during World War II; the soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division trained in Colorado, California, and Washington State and fought in Italy during 1944-45.

Librarian, historian and author. Illinois State Historian, director of the Illinois State Historical Society and head of the Illinois State Historical Library (1956-1967).

Educated at Cornell College (Mt. Vernon, Iowa, 1948) and University of Chicago (M.A., library science, 1950), Walton was also employed as a librarian at the State University of Iowa, Iowa City (1950-1956); Director of Libraries, Northern Illinois University (1967-1977); Director of Libraries, University of Colorado, Boulder (1977-1988); and director, Rare Books and Special Collections, University of Colorado (1988- ). He was an editor of several books and also authored many articles on Illinois and Civil War history. Walton served on many state and local commissions dealing with urban planning and historic preservation.
