Biographical notes:

Composer and arts administrator Allen Sapp was born in Philadelphia in 1922. He studied with Walter Piston at Harvard University, and privately with Nadia Boulanger and Aaron Copland. Sapp taught at Harvard University (1950-58) and Wellesley College (1958-1961), then became chair of the Music Department at the State University of New York at Buffalo (1961-1975), where he co-founded the Center for Creative and Performing Arts. He also held administrative positions with Arts/Worth, the American Council of the Arts in Education, and the National Arts Council. Sapp was later Provost for Communications and the Arts at Florida State University (1976-78); and Dean, then Professor of Composition, at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (1978-93). Allen Sapp died in Cincinnati on Jan. 4, 1999.
