Biographical notes:

James Fowle Baldwin (1782-1862), the son of Loammi (for whom the Baldwin apple was named) and Mary Fowle Baldwin, was a civil engineer. He helped his brother, Loammi, construct the dry dock at Charlestown Navy Yard. In 1828, he was appointed by the state of Massachusetts as a commissioner to make surveys for a railroad from Boston to Albany, and from 1830 to 1835, he built the Boston and Lowell road. He was a state senator from Suffolk. He was born on 29 April 1782 in Woburn, Mass., married Sarah Parsons, and died on 20 May 1862.
