Housewives League of Detroit
Biographical notes:
The Housewives League of Detroit, an organization of African American women, was founded in June 1930 by Mrs. Fannie B. Peck. The aim of this united action group was to strengthen the economic base of the black community by directing the spending habits of black families into businesses owned and operated by blacks. From 1941-1951 they advertised activities by publishing the Housewives League Bulletin, a bi-monthly newspaper, and the Trade Week Guide, a semi-annual consumers guide. This local organization became the model for the National Housewives League, established in Durham, N.C., August 23, 1953.
