David Brion Davis was born on February 16, 1927, in Denver, Colorado, to Clyde Brion and Martha Davis. He received a B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1950 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1956. He was a professor in the history department at Cornell University from 1955 to 1969 and a professor of history at Yale University from 1969 until his retirement in 2001. His The Problem of Slavery in Western Culture won the Pulitzer Prize in 1967.
