Bruce Mudgett was born in Jesup, Iowa, attended the University of Idaho Prepatory School, Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his Ph. D. He came to the University of Minnesota in 1919 as a professor of economics in the new School of Business, and specialized in insurance. In 1916, he married Mildred Dennett, who was the first exception to the University of Minnesota's rule against hiring wives of faculty members, when she was appointed to the School of Social Work, also in 1919.

Bruce D. Mudgett was born on February 10, 1884. He attended Columbia University, earning his bachelor's degree in 1908. He then went to the University of Pennsylvania, earning his Ph.D. in 1917. In 1919, Mudgett came to the University of Minnesota as professor in economics, with a specialty in insurance, in the newly established School of Business. His wife, Mildred Mudgett, was also employed by the University, in the School of Social Work. A University rule was in place at this time that did not allow the wives of University faculty to be also be employed at the University. Mildred Mudgett's hiring was the first exception to this rule. Mudgett retired from the University of Minnesota in 1952. Bruce Mudgett died on February 6, 1980.
