Founder of Saginaw, Mich.
Born in Charlestown, Mass., son of Samuel Dexter, former Secretary of War and Secretary of the Treasury. Samuel W. came to Michigan in 1824 after grad. from Harvard. Bought acreage in Scio Twp. W. of Ann Arbor, part of which was the Village of Dexter in 1830. He was a lawyer, judge, member of the Board of Regents of U. of M., Founded Saginaw, 1825, and also Eaton Rapids and Tecumseh. Established the "Emigrant" at Ann Arbor, Mich. Married Susan Dunham in 1825 who died in Sept. 1827. In 1828 he married Millicent Bond and had three children: Mary, Julia (Stannard), Wirt, Catherine and Hannah. Died in Dexter, Mich., Feb 6, 1863. (from Mich. Chron. p. 273-74; Mich. Biographies)
