Robert H. Tyndall was born in Indianapolis. He worked as a tailor, a banker, and a businessman before being elected mayor of Indianapolis in 1942, a position he held until his death. During the First World War, he served as a colonel with the 150th Field Artillery of the 42nd (Rainbow) Division in France and Germany.
