William Woolsey Winthrop: B.A., Yale, 1851; LL.B., Yale Law School, 1853; practiced in Boston, 1855-1860; practiced in New York City, 1860-1861; enlisted in the army during the Civil War and served through the war attaining the rank of Colonel; transferred to regular army, 1867-1895; Judge Advocate of the Division of the Pacific 1882-1886; Professor of Law, West Point, 1886-1890; on duty at War Dept., 1890-1895.
