George Gilbert Aime Murray was born in Australia to aristocratic parents of Irish ancestry. He came to England with his mother and attended Oxford, becoming an eminent classical scholar and educator. He was also an author and translator, notable for preparing classical Greek plays for the modern stage. His translations were very creative, and carefully constructed to appeal to modern audiences, and the plays eventually found considerable success, both as productions and in print form, and were influential in reviving interest in Greek drama. Murray had numerous literary friendships, and his family served as models for the main characters in Shaw's Major Barbara.
