Biographical notes:

Jacob Siegel served as managing editor of the Chicago edition of the Jewish Daily Forward and was active in Jewish labor organizations such as the Workmen's Circle. After the Jewish Labor Committee (JLC) formed in New York City in 1934, Jacob Siegel chaired the Chicago branch of the national organization. The JLC was active in organizing Jewish groups in opposition to fascism, assisting the victims of Nazi dominated Europe during World War II, and helping survivors after the war. The JLC advocated on behalf on democracy and later supported the Civil Rights movement in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s.
