Born in North Easton, Massachusetts on September 26, 1874, Oakes Ames was the son of Massachusetts Governor Oliver Ames. He received a bachelor's degree from Harvard in 1898, followed by a master's degree in 1900. Ames had a lengthy and distinguished career as a botanist, including serving as supervisor of the Arnold Arboretum from 1927-1937 and as the Arboretum's second director from 1937 to 1945. He was also a professor of botany at Harvard University. Ames died in Ormond, Florida on April 30, 1950.

Oakes Ames, husband of Blanche (Ames) Ames, was a leading authority on orchids. In addition to teaching botany at Harvard University and directing its Botanical Museum, Oakes Ames formed a men's league to advance woman suffrage.

Ames (1874-1950) was educated at Harvard University (A.B. 1898, A.M. 1899) and specialized in two areas of botany; orchids and economic botany. He administered the Botanic Garden and Botanic Museum at Harvard, 1899-1950; Chairman of the Division of Biology, 1826-1935 and Chairman of the Council of Botanical Collections and Supervisor of the Biological Laboratory, the Atkins Garden in Cuba, and the Arnold Arboretum, 1927-1935. He taught botany at Harvard, 1900-1941.
