Biographical/Historical Sketch

George Spindler joined the Stanford faculty in 1950, as professor of anthropology and education. Louise Spindler earned the first Ph.D. in anthropology awarded by Stanford in 1956 and remained with the department as lecturer and research associate. They retired in 1978, but continued to teach occasional classes.
