Walter Robert Dornberger (b. Sept. 6, 1895, Hesse, Germany-d. 1980), Lieutenant General in the German Army and engineer, became chief of the German Board of Ordnance in 1930 and began development of solid and liquid fuel rockets. He established the Army Guided Missile Station and served as military and technical chief until 1944 when he became commander of the German Armed Forces for the entire guided missile program. He was a prisoner of war in England from 1945 to 1947. He emigrated to the United States in 1947, and went to work for Bell Aircraft Corporation.
